Discover how the VC-T engine in the 2019 Infiniti QX50 adjusts its compression ratio to deliver power and efficiency from one engine.
The VC-T (Variable Compression Turbocharged) engine in the 2019 Infiniti QX50 has a unique multi-link system that can changes how far its pistons rise in its cylinders, which changes the engine’s displacement and compression ratio.
The VC-T engine has a joint between the crankshaft and the connecting rods, and a computer-controlled arm moves the joint in response to pressure on the gas pedal. The mechanism incidentally varies the stroke by 1.2mm, which actually changees the engine’s displacement to vary slightly—from 1971cc (14:1) to 1997cc (8:1).
The low-compression ratio of 8:1 generates more horsepower, while the high-compression ratio of 14:1 offers a claimed 31 miles per gallon.
