Adding performance to your engine naturally creates more engine heat. Like lungs on an athlete, your water pump is critical to engine cooling.
Edelbrock offers two levels of water pumps:
High Performance Water Pumps: designed for street high performance small and big-block engines. Fit various domestic engines.
Competition ‘Victor’ Water Pumps: fit small block Chevy, Ford and GM Ls Motors
Edelbrock has been producing their line of aluminum waterpumps for over 20 years. As we all know, Edelbrock is best-known for their intake manifolds, which like a water pump, are designed to maximize flow. While an intake moves an air/fuel mixture, a performance water pump needs to maximize flow of your engine coolant.
Edelbrock is very proud to produce their water pumps in the USA. They control all aspects of manufacturing, even pouring the aluminum castings in their California foundry. See this video tour of their foundry:
Using your engine coolant to reduce heat relies on three design features: pressure, balance and flow. Edelbrock has optimized both the pump impeller and water pump housing around these three design requirements.
Impeller Design
The stock impeller is designed to flow water in both direction. This basically mans the veins that move the water are a compromise and basically straight. As the image below illustrates, the stock impeller is smaller and doesn’t even fill up the cavity in the housing. This unused “gap” will cause cavitation at higher RPMs.
The Edelbrock impeller is designed to flow in only one direction. As a result, the impeller veins are shaped much like a boat propeller. Also, the impeller fills up the entire pump cavity. So it’s naturally about 20% larger, minimizing cavitation.
Flow Balance
With the impeller moving a lot more fluid, Edelbrock designed castings that balance the flow between both side of the engine. In fact, Edelbrock dyno’s their pumps to verify the balance is within 1%. Watch this video for more details:
Edelbrock water pumps are available in three finishes: As-Cast “Satin”, Polished and Endura Shine (closest to chrome).
Edelbrock’s competition water pumps are designed with a few additional features. Watch this video to learn more:
