The Lotus Evija was revealed to the world yesterday (July 16, 2019). The electric hypercar has a claimed output of 2000 PS (equivalent to 1973 hp), making it the world’s most powerful series production road car.
However, with a starting price of £1.7 million ($2.1 million), you may not be seeing many on the road.
Lotus claims it can get from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in less than three seconds, and achieve 300 km/h (186 mph) in less than nine seconds. Evija uses four motors, and a 70 kWh battery pack with 2,000 kW output. Lotus is claiming a driving range of 250 miles.
Evija’s battery has the ability to accept an 800 kW charge, which would allow for a full charge in nine minutes, whenever that’s commercially possible. It was designed and engineered in the UK, and will be produced at Hethel, UK, the home of Lotus since 1966. A maximum of 130 Evijas will be built.
The Lotus Evija was unveiled at an exclusive event in London, with more than 350 VIP guests in attendance. Lotus Cars CEO Phil Popham and Design Director Russell Carr presented the two-seater EV hypercar to the audience. A convoy of 12 historic and current Lotus cars – all yellow – whipped up interest around London and outside the venue.
Popham described it as a bold statement of intent from the iconic British company, and said: “Evija will re-establish Lotus as a leader in terms of engineering and design. It is a hypercar that is built ‘For The Drivers’.”

The origins of Lotus Cars goes back to 1948 when Colin Chapman built his first racing car in a garage. In its early days, Lotus sold cars aimed at privateer racers and trialists. Today, at its headquarters in Hethel, United Kingdom, Lotus designs and builds both race cars and world-class, high-performance sports cars, including the award-winning Evora, the iconic Elise, the stunning Exige, and the all-electric Evija.
