When a PCV valve goes bad, it can be a headache, literally, because the valve is part of the PCV system that removes harmful oil vapors from the engine and prevents them from being released into the atmosphere.
The PCV valve also helps control the flow of vapors from the crankcase to the intake manifold, so it’s a good idea to follow your vehicle’s recommended replacement schedule, which can be as often as every thirty thousand miles.
Several clues your PCV valve needs attention include smoke coming out of the tailpipe, excessive oil consumption from a valve stuck in the open position, or an engine that’s running roughly due to oil-contaminated spark plugs.
